Importance and Reason of the Topic:
The development of photonic-based devices and systems such as high-speed fiber optic communication systems, line of sight wireless optical communication systems, THz communication systems, erbium-doped fiber amplifiers, broadband ASE sources and fiber lasers used in these systems are one of today's most interesting research areas.

In addition, researches on the design, development, modeling and simulation of fiber optic based distributed sensor systems and sensor signal processing are being carried out for all kinds of remote sensing and control applications, monitoring of border, factory, campus security, oil pipelines and mega structures for security purpose.

In this special session on "Photonic-based communication and sensor system applications" to be organized in SIU'2017, it is aimed to provide a platform in our country where valuable researchers working in this field will come together to share their knowledge and experiences.

Résumé of the Organizer:
Establishment of the "Photonic Technologies Application and Research Center (FOTAM)" under the Rectorate of Dumlupınar University has been approved by the decision No.44726 of the Council of Higher Education dated 22.07.2016. Subsequently, "Dumlupınar University Photonic Technologies Application and Research Center Regulation" was published in the Official Gazette dated 31.10.2016 and numbered 29874 and went into operation. On 01.11.2016, Prof. Ahmet ALTUNCU has been appointed as a director of the Photonic Technologies Application and Research Center. Fiber optic communication system components for high-speed communication systems, erbium doped fiber amplifiers, fiber lasers, broadband optical ASE light sources, design, prototype production and tests and certifications of optical fiber based distributed sensor systems for industrial and military remote sensing and monitoring applications is being researched under FOTAM.
