13- From Subsea to Outer Space: Signal processing and communication for extreme environments

Extreme environments such as underwater, outer space, high altitude, deep tunneling works where human survival time is limited to less than a few minutes without special personal protective equipment and life support systems, bring their own communication problems. Although the physical parameters of the environment are very different even opposing, the  communication and signal processing issues combine in many common challenges: In addition to isolation problems arising from protective equipment, those extreme environments impose extreme physical conditions such as temperature, pressure, gravity. There is an obvious need for multidisciplinary approach and communication of researchers working on different but still extreme environment to work on:

  • Processing of vital signals to assess the efficiency of ancillary life support systems and personal protection.
  • Measurement and Assessment of leading indicators of degraded health conditions
  • Telemedicine with special emphasize on bidirectional emergency telemedicine
  • Communication with normal terrestrial habitat
  • Communication within the extreme environment

There are several attempts on Subsea-Space axis but a holistic event to gather the scientists working on signal processing and communication for extreme environments is not abundant. We hope that this special session creates synergies between researchers, recruit new researchers in this area and  incubate new networks to challenge the extreme environments.

The general subjects  ae listed below but not limited to:

  • Signal Processing
  • Machine learning
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Pattern Recognition
  • Cloud Computing
  • Geospatial techniques
  • Social networks
  • Internet of things
  • Data mining
  • Big data
  • Telemedicine
  • Classification, recognition and segmentation

The topics that can be examined in depth are:

  • Autonomous vehicle navigation
  • Detection and monitoring of life forms in extreme environments
  • Physiological signal analysis for detection of leading indicators of degraded health conditions
  • Image and signal processing for detection of endogenous bubble formation
  • Estimation of stress components due to compression / decompression
  • Formal risk assessment and methods for estimating acceptable risk boundaries
